Government has with immediate effect banned the sale of alcohol in markets and bus stations.

In addition, the authority has directed the cancellation of all liquor home shops licenses.

This is according to circular issued in Lusaka on Thursday by Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Permanent Secretary in-charge of Technical Services, Nicholas Phiri.

Phirl directed local authorities in the country to enforce laws regulating the manufacturing, distribution and consumption of alcohol.

He stated in circular to the local authorities that the directive is in view of the devastating effects of alcohol on the society largely facilitated by its illegal sale across the country.

The Permanent Secretary further directed local authorities to ensure that illegal vendors of alcohol cease their illegal trading with immediate effect.
