The Zambian government has reportedly rolled out urgent measures to combat the widespread infestation of Fall Army Worms, a growing threat to the nation’s food security.

Agriculture Minister, Reuben Mtolo, announced on Saturday that the infestation, reported in all ten provinces, posed a serious risk to the livelihoods of farmers and the country’s food supply.

In response, the Ministry of Agriculture claimed that it had launched a comprehensive plan to address the crisis swiftly and effectively.

“The Ministry anticipated an increase in Fall Army Worm infestations due to prolonged dry spells,” Mtolo said.

He claimed that 55,000 liters of low-risk pesticides had been procured and distributed strategically across the country.

Mtolo emphasized that the chemicals, provided free of charge to farmers, were positioned to enable swift responses in all districts.

He said farmers experiencing infestations were urged to report to their Camp Extension Officers immediately.

“Upon receiving the chemicals, farmers must begin spraying their fields without delay. This rapid intervention is critical to suppress pest populations, protect crops, and mitigate further damage,” Mtolo added.

The minister called for collaboration between farmers and stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and efficient response, stressing the importance of early detection and reporting.

“By working together, we can safeguard Zambia’s crops and secure the nation’s food supply,” Mtolo said.

He reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to mitigating the threat and ensuring food security.
