The government has assured the Catholic Church of its continued role as a key development partner, recognizing its contributions to social welfare and national progress.

Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, emphasized that the Church had played a crucial role in Zambia’s political and constitutional matters, and remained an important ally in addressing societal challenges.

Speaking in Chipata on Wednesday during a meeting with Bishop George Lungu of the Catholic Diocese of Chipata, Mweetwa reiterated President Hakainde Hichilema’s commitment to dialogue as the preferred approach in resolving issues.

“The government stands ready to be counselled and engage with the Church on any matters that affect the nation,” he said.

Discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between the Church and the government to uplift vulnerable communities.

While acknowledging government’s ongoing efforts to improve citizens’ welfare, Bishop Lungu noted that more still needed to be done.

However, he expressed concern over increasing attacks on Catholic bishops by certain individuals and institutions through various media platforms.

Mweetwa, accompanied by Independent Broadcasting Authority officials, is touring radio stations in Eastern Province.
