Govt accuses Patriotic Front, others of neglecting power sector, causing electricity crisis (Video)

The government has accused the former ruling Patriotic Front (PF) administration of neglecting investment in alternative power generation, leading to the prolonged load-shedding currently affecting the country.

Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, made these allegations during a media briefing on Thursday.

Mweetwa asserted that the ongoing energy crisis and economic challenges were cumulative in nature, stemming from past governance failures.

Mweetwa said the country could have been in a better position regarding power supply if the previous administrations had implemented measures now being undertaken by the New Dawn Administration.

He urged opposition political parties to propose alternative policies that could help generate more power amid drought effects, rather than politicising the situation.

“We also want to address former President Edgar Lungu’s statements that Zambians are facing hard times due to the failure of the UPND government to manage the economic sector effectively. We find this statement highly misplaced,” he said.

Mweetwa stated that while the government respects Lungu’s constitutional freedom of speech and his opinions, his allegations are unsubstantiated.

He insisted that the long hours of load-shedding were not attributable to the current administration but rather to the lack of sufficient water and the previous government’s failure to invest in the energy sector.
