Google Maps introduces time machine, enables historical imagery of neighborhoods dating back decades

Google has reportedly introduced several new updates to its popular navigation service, Google Maps, including a “time machine” feature that allows users to see historical imagery of their neighborhoods dating back decades.

In a recent blog post, Google revealed that some aerial and satellite images in certain areas go as far back as 80 years, allowing users to explore how their surroundings have changed over time.

In cities like Berlin, London, Paris and Warsaw, the historical imagery stretches back to the 1930s, according to The Indian Express.

Google also announced improvements to Google Earth, making it easier for researchers and organizations to use the platform for their projects.

Additionally, the Street View feature—already featuring over 280 billion images—will expand to nearly 80 countries, including new locations like Bosnia’s countryside, medieval villages, and Namibia’s sandy mountains.

As part of its updates, Google is also enhancing satellite imagery on both Google Earth and Maps.

The company is leveraging the Cloud Score+ AI model to create clearer, more vibrant visuals by removing elements like cloud shadows, haze, and mist.
