‘Golden trophy is coming home,’ says celebrated Zambian runner, Samukonga

Social media is buzzing following the victory of celebrated Zambian runner, Muzala Samukonga, at the 2023 Ostrava Golden Spike Athletics meet in the Czech Republic.

Samukonga’s 45.05 seconds was enough to earn him yet another victory in the 400 metre race.

South Africa’s Zakhiti Nene was runner-up in the race which is being used as part of preparations for the World Athletics Championships to be held in Budapest, Hungary from August 19th to the 27th.

Samukonga confirmed the development on his Facebook page.

“GOLDEN SPIKE TROPHY ITS COMING HOME. We are back in the champions league. All I can say is Lord I will forever praise your name It’s Coming Home,” the post read.

In just one hour of posting, the status has already achieved 1 thousand comments.

Various high profile people are among those to congratulate the athlete in the comment section of the post.

Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa, former Defence Minister Geoffrey Mwamba and singer Dambisa all took to social media to congratulate the athlete.

Veteran musician Danny wrote: “Congratulations, son of the soil 💯.”

Former Transparency International Zambia President Reuben Lifuka and former Kalulushi Mayor Rashida Mulenga are also among the list of high standing members of society to congratulate the athlete.

Just under two weeks ago, the athlete came a close second behind world record holder Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa at his maiden appearance at the Diamond League in Oslo, Norway.
