Leadership Movement has called on government to empower women with land so that they can unitilise it for production of various food crops and investments.

Party Secretary General, Jairos Ngoma, said it was unfortunate that government had continued to give huge areas of land to foreigners while leaving women out of the equation like the case of Kanyelele area in Mpika.

Ngoma said this during a weekly media briefing in Lusaka on Saturday.

He noted that with the declaration of the drought as the state of emergency, this required the effort of all well meaning Zambians to help mitigate its impact.

“Women are hardworking and if they are given land, there can be enough food in the country and hunger can be the thing of the past,” Ngoma stated.

He also advised government to assist women with boreholes for irrigation to help cushion the current drought.

Ngoma said this was one of the quickest intervention to make the country food secure.

He further expressed concern on the happenings in Kasenengwa where the District Commissioner (DC) told the women to go and celebrate Women’s day at their homes.

“During the celebration of women’s day, Kasenengwa District Commissioner told the women to celebrate their day at home and it only took the intervention of Chief Mishoro to resolve the misunderstanding,” he stated.

Ngoma accused government of being vague on the issues of women empowerment during the celebration of their day.

He questioned this years women’s day theme titled “invest in women: accelerate progress” saying government was not living up to the theme.
