G&G Bakery has expressed concern over Kitwe City Council’s decision to issue what it called a “misleading” public statement alleging unsanitary operations at its facility without proper engagement.
In a statement on Friday, the bakery described the council’s actions as defamatory, accusing the local authority of rushing to social media without giving the business a fair opportunity to address concerns.
“Instead of engaging us, Kitwe City Council has chosen to publicly defame our business on social media. We strongly believe in constructive dialogue and would have appreciated an opportunity to address any concerns raised,” the bakery stated.

The company clarified that it did not obstruct the council’s inspection team but prevented officers who were not in proper attire from entering sensitive production areas, citing food safety protocols.
“As a bakery operating for many years, we have consistently maintained the quality of our products and have had no history of health scares. Food safety and hygiene are our top priorities, and we take pride in delivering high-quality baked goods to our customers,” G&G Bakery said.
The bakery further criticized the council for arriving at the facility with media personnel and immediately issuing public statements without conducting a second site visit to verify compliance.
“It is concerning that the council arrived with a media battalion prepared to make public statements without giving us a fair chance to address the situation directly,” the statement read.
On Thursday, Kitwe City Council announced the closure of G&G Bakery, citing unsanitary conditions and stating that operations would remain suspended until all concerns were resolved.
