A fuel shortage has gripped Luanshya District in the Copperbelt Province, disrupting daily activities and affecting the local economy.
Former Luanshya Mayor, Nathan Chanda, expressed grave concern over the situation, urging authorities to take immediate action.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chanda described the erratic fuel supply in the garden town as a significant challenge that had disrupted livelihoods and businesses.
He highlighted that residents were struggling to commute to work, while local transport operators, including bus and taxi drivers, had been severely impacted.
“Most bus and taxi drivers are now traveling to nearby towns like Kitwe and Ndola to purchase fuel, which is increasing their costs and further raising the cost of living. Their businesses depend heavily on fuel,” Chanda said.
He also called on the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) to ensure equitable distribution of fuel reserves across the country.
“If the nation has adequate fuel reserves, companies operating in Luanshya must be held accountable to maintain a steady supply, as is the case in other districts,” Chanda stated.
The former mayor appealed for immediate intervention to stabilize fuel supply and mitigate the adverse effects on businesses and the community in Luanshya.
The disruption has heightened concerns over the district’s economic stability, with residents and business owners eager for a swift resolution.
