FQM claims $1.6 billion committed to local procurements

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has committed to US$1.6 billion in local procurement, with 44 percent of the purchases sourced from Zambian-owned companies.

Company’s Head of Infrastructure, Jed Goldstein, highlighted the company’s commitment to expanding local procurement and formalizing a partnership with the Zambia Association of Manufacturers (ZAM).

In a statement released in Lusaka on Sunday, Goldstein claimed that the collaboration aimed to elevate Zambian manufacturers to meet global standards in supplying the mining sector.

While a majority of company’s procurement comes from companies registered in Zambia, Goldstein acknowledged that a significant portion was sourced from firms with minority Zambian ownership.

He stated the importance of working with ZAM to ensure that local suppliers can fully participate in Zambia’s mining value chain.

“Zambia is a major copper producer, and with copper being a critical mineral for the future, it’s essential that the local supply chain becomes more impactful and competitive,” Goldstein said.

He added that the initiative aligned with the national vision of producing three million tons of copper annually, a goal set by President Hakainde Hichilema.

“It’s been a pleasure to participate in Zambia Manufacturing Month and we are excited to work with ZAM to achieve our shared vision,” he said.

Meanwhile, ZAM Chief Executive Officer, Muntanga Lindunda, announced the conclusion of the 14th Manufacturers Month with a celebratory event recognizing outstanding achievements in the sector.

Lindunda praised the resilience and innovation of Zambia’s manufacturers, despite the challenges faced in recent years.

“Tonight, we honor those who have driven growth and led the way toward a more competitive and sustainable future,” Lindunda said, expressing gratitude to all partners and stakeholders who contributed to the success of the event.
