Four dead, 29 injured in Kafue bus accident, police name causalities, survivors

A fatal road accident in Kafue has left four people dead and 29 others injured after a bus overturned along the Great North Road near Kafue Boys Secondary School on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

The accident occurred at around 04:30 hours, involving a Juldan Motors Marcopolo bus, registration number BAJ 3715, which overturned.

The bus was en route southbound when the driver reportedly lost control, causing it to overturn and land on its right side.

Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed that four people, including a male adult, two female adults, and a female juvenile, were killed on the spot.

Their bodies have been taken to Kafue General Hospital mortuary for identification.

Hamoonga added that 29 passengers sustained serious injuries, including 11 male adults, 17 female adults, and one female juvenile.

All are receiving treatment at Kafue General Hospital.

The bus driver, identified as Lebani Mwanza, 32, of Lusaka, also sustained suspected internal injuries and was hospitalized.

Among the deceased, the following individuals have been identified:

1. Miyoba Mooya – Adult, Lusaka (address unknown)
2. Ruth Malambo – 51, Lusaka
3. Muhammed Laila – 6, South Africa
4. Ramishi Mussa Mattmbwa – 21, Tanzania.

In addition to the fatalities, the injured passengers receiving treatment included:

1. Felistus Wanja – 43 years
2. Cathrine H. Tembo – 50 years
3. Davie Kandota – 40 years, Lilongwe, Malawi
4. Stella Chibangeni
5. Mubanga Mostela – 59 years, Mpika
6. Emeli Kalimbwe – 25 years, Lusaka
7. Agness Sakala – 36 years, Lusaka
8. Mthopis Madlela – 33 years, RSA
9. Cynthia Sampa – 35 years, Nkana East, Kitwe
10. Joseph Mwansa – 46 years, Libala South, Lusaka
11. Nachilima Loveness – 45 years, Siavonga
12. Nkhata Christopher – 66 years, Libala South, Lusaka
13. Abushili Mwendapole – 25 years, Tanzania
14. Shupiwe Ndhlovu – 41 years, Lusaka
15. Beauty Brenda Msowoya – 45 years, Malawi
16. Audrey Mwela – 49 years, Olympia, Lusaka
17. Christabel Chalwe – 46 years, Lusaka
18. Teresiah Muthoni – 37 years, Kenya
19. Agness Phiri – 40 years, Lusaka
20. Meck Njombi – 32 years, Kamwala, Lusaka
21. Female Juvenile – 9 years
22. Gloria Mutale – 48 years
23. Elizabeth Munjombe – 36 years
24. Jean Ziba – 66 years
25. Misheck Mbewe – 50 years
26. Stella Shimanja – Adult
27. John Mwansa – 46 years
28. Odo Banda – 29 years, Chongwe
29. Unidentified female adult – In critical condition.

He said preliminary investigations point to excessive speed as the cause of the accident.

The Zambia Police extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery to all those injured. Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be provided as necessary, according to the police.
