Police in Lusaka have formally arrested and charged Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) leader, Edith Nawakwi, for the offence of abduction.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, said Nawakwi, aged 63, of Roma Township in Lusaka was arrested for offence of abduction, which is contrary to section 253 and 256 chapter 87 of the Laws of Zambia.

Mwale confirmed the arrest of Nawakwi in a statement issued in Lusaka following the summon to appear before the Police on Tuesday.

“Facts of the offence are that the suspect, while acting together with others, is alleged to have forced Pheluna and Milton Hatembo into confinement against their will at different lodges in Lusaka after deceiving them that she was going to help them,” he said.

Mwale said Nawakwi asked the Hatembo’s to travel to Lusaka from Choma and during the time of their confinement, the victims were not allowed to move, communicate with anyone and do anything without her authority.

“This occurred between September 2020 and January 2021 in Lusaka,” he said.

Mwale said the suspect had been released on Police Bond pending court appearance.
