Former Socialist Party National Chairperson for Party Mobilisation, Wilson Banda, has accused party leader, Dr. Fred M’membe, of evading critical issues raised by members who have left the party.
M’membe recently stated in the media that the Socialist Party would not progress if it continued to tolerate the “creeping” indiscipline, emphasizing that “expulsions are necessary.”
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Banda claimed that M’membe was dodging the serious concerns raised by departing members, instead of addressing them directly.
Banda asserted that those leaving the party had cited M’membe’s alleged dictatorial and “know-it-all” attitude, along with other significant leadership challenges.
“People have been leaving the Socialist Party, raising serious concerns about the dictatorial and undemocratic, know-it-all attitude of Dr. M’membe, among other serious leadership challenges facing the party,” Banda stated.
He questioned why M’membe had failed to respond to these concerns, asking whether expressing divergent views and demanding transparency, accountability, proper mobilization and adherence to constitutional provisions amounted to indiscipline.
“Is questioning why only Dr. M’membe, his daughter Akende, and his two friends Dr. Chris Mwikisa and Dr. Cosmas Musumali are the only ones making all the decisions in the party considered indiscipline?” Banda asked.
Banda further argued that if expressing divergent views and holding leadership accountable was considered indiscipline, as M’membe suggested, then the party was under dictatorial leadership.
He challenged M’membe to clarify what constituted indiscipline within the party and to name those accused of it, along with the specific wrongs they had committed.
