Nkana Football Club has been taken to court by its former player, Obeddy Masumbuko, over unpaid contractual benefits exceeding K300,000.
In a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court, Masumbuko alleged that Nkana FC breached two contracts he signed with the club, leading to unpaid wages, bonuses, and other entitlements.
Court documents indicate that Masumbuko played for Nkana FC from 2018 to 2023.
His first contract, signed in November 2018 after transferring from Lumwana Radiants FC, was a two-year deal with a monthly salary of K9,000.
However, he claims that from March to December 2020, his salary was unlawfully reduced by 20 percent, resulting in a shortfall of K17,077.61.
In November 2020, Masumbuko signed a second three-year contract, which increased his salary to K10,000 and included a winning bonus per match.
He now alleges that Nkana FC failed to pay him K10,500 in bonuses for four victories between 2020 and 2021.
Additionally, he accused the club of failing to pay his K150,000 sign-on fee from the second contract, with K132,500 still outstanding.
Masumbuko further contends that Nkana FC made unlawful salary deductions for NAPSA contributions but never remitted the funds, leaving him with K37,946.16 in unaccounted pension contributions.
He also claims the club owes him K134,000 in gratuity payments from both contracts, which should have been settled upon their completion.
“As a result of the defendant’s breach, the plaintiff has suffered losses and damages, having been deprived of his contractual earnings,” he stated.
Masumbuko, through his legal representatives, issued multiple demand letters in August, October, and November 2024, but Nkana FC has yet to settle the outstanding payments.
