Forensic pathologist exposes horrific abuse in 14-year-old maid’s murder case

The courtroom atmosphere grew tense as forensic pathologist Cordelia Himwaze laid bare the brutal truth behind the tragic death of 14-year-old Janet Chola Mpundu.

On trial for her murder are Lusaka couple, Smart Mumba, and Chanda Majory Lwembo, accused of causing the young maid’s death, which was initially reported as a sleep-related incident.

Dr. Himwaze’s testimony painted a harrowing picture of Janet’s final moments.

Photographic evidence revealed severe physical abuse, including the traumatic removal of her nails, a detail that shocked the courtroom.

The postmortem examination further unveiled a litany of injuries: punctured abrasions on Janet’s upper back, a laceration and burn on her left ear, and multiple abrasions on her arms and shoulders.

Dr. Himwaze described how removing Janet’s skin during the examination revealed extensive internal bleeding, both under the skin and deep within her muscles, including significant hemorrhaging in her head.

Despite the graphic nature of the evidence, Dr. Himwaze maintained her composure, explaining that Janet’s injuries, including burns and blunt force trauma, were consistent with the use of implements in a downward motion.

She concluded that Janet’s cause of death was multiple blunt impact trauma resulting from a severe assault.

In a tense cross-examination, the pathologist was asked if her conclusions were influenced by preconceived notions based on information provided by the investigating officer.

She firmly denied any bias.

The trial is set to continue on September 16.
