Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mulambo Haimbe, has intensified efforts to secure support for Zambia’s Samuel Munzele Maimbo in his bid for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB).

Speaking at a breakfast event on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Haimbe emphasized the need for a leader with extensive experience in resource mobilization and a broad network across financial institutions.

He highlighted Maimbo’s qualifications, noting his over 21 years of service at the World Bank, where he currently holds the position of Vice President responsible for Budget, Performance Review and Strategic Planning.

“Maimbo is the only candidate endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and his extensive experience with financial and development institutions will greatly benefit the African Development Bank,” Haimbe said.

Maimbo, in his remarks, expressed his commitment to working closely with regional bodies and emphasized the importance of partnerships to strengthen the AfDB’s role in the region.

Etambuyu Anamela Gundersen, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reiterated Zambia’s support for Maimbo, citing his professional track record as a key factor in transforming the bank for the benefit of all member countries.

The election for the African Development Bank presidency is scheduled for May 2025.
