Five die, three others injured in road accidents along Great North road

Five people have reportedly died while three others sustained serious injuries after the vehicles they were traveling in had an accident in Chisamba District along the Great North Road.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Danny Mwale, said the deceased, all male persons have not yet been identified including the driver of the Hino Ranger bearing registration number ABR 2565.

Mwale confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lusaka.

He said only one victim from the SINO Truck and trailer bearing registration numbers AIC 6508 and BAR 9601 was identified as Hendrix Hamainza, aged 30, of Kanyama Compound in Lusaka.

“The SINO truck and trailer, belonging to Kazumba Trucking was driven by Sadok Tembo, aged 35, of Makeni in Lusaka and had three male passengers on board. They were heading towards Lusaka,” Mwale said.

He said the accident occurred on August 28, 2023 around 16:30 hours at Trotters area in Chisamba District.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident happened when the driver of the Hino Ranger with four passengers on board, while driving towards Chibombo District, failed to keep to his near-side lane and went to hit into the SINO Truck and trailer which moving in the opposite direction,” Mwale said.

He added that five people including the driver of the HINO Ranger sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead upon arrival at Chisamba District Hospital.

Mwale said their bodies were deposited in the same hospital mortuary awaiting identification while the injured victims are receiving treatment at Liteta Hospital.

“Sadok Tembo escaped with minor injuries and was treated at Liteta Hospital and later discharged however the HINO Ranger was extensively damaged,” he said.

Mwale said the other truck had its cabin damaged.
