The Kitwe City Council (KCC) Fire Brigade has reported a significant rise in fire and emergency incidents during the third quarter of 2024.

Council Public Relations Manager, Mwaka Nakweti, revealed in a statement on Thursday that the brigade responded to 69 incidents during the same period last year.

This included 11 special services of an emergency nature, 10 non-emergency special services, and 48 fire-related emergencies.

In contrast, the third quarter of 2024 saw a notable increase, with the brigade attending to 99 incidents.

Of these, 75 were fire and fire-related emergencies, 13 were emergency special services and 11 were non-emergency special services.

Nakweti attributed the rise in incidents to various causes, including unattended electrical appliances during load-shedding periods, unsupervised candles and braziers and mishandling of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stoves.

Other causes are still under investigation.

Tragically, this quarter had also recorded four deaths resulting from fire-related incidents.

Nakweti urged residents to exercise caution and adhere to fire safety measures at all times.
