Fire has reportedly gutted part of the University of Zambia hostel, consuming room 27 in the Tiyende Pamaodzi (TP) three block, a four-floor hostel.
According to an eyewitness, the extent of the damage has not yet been determined as investigations are still ongoing.
In an interview with Zambia Monitor on Tuesday, one of the university students, Chileshe Musonda, claimed to have been sleeping in the room next to the room that caught fire.

“I heard some noise, people screaming that the hostel is on fire,” Musonda stated.
He said that when he woke up and walked out of his room, he saw smoke everywhere on the floor where he stayed.
He added that while attempting to evacuate the premises, he saw people rushing toward the upper floors to extinguish the fire.
He added that he and other students formed a chain to pass buckets of water from one hostel to another, as water could only be drawn from a different hostel.
“We got buckets filled with water to extinguish the fire,” he further narrated.
Musonda noted that the affected hostel only had water available on the ground floor.
“We had to pass the water from one hostel, which is between six to 10 meters away from the affected hostel,” he pointed out.
However, Musonda said he did not know what caused the fire.
“The owner of the room was in the room at the time and said nothing regarding what started the fire,” he mentioned.
He identified the affected individual as a fifth-year student who was in the room sleeping when the fire started.
He said that the occupant of the room sustained burns on his knee.
