An upgrade to the Tazama Pipeline infrastructure is reportedly in the works, with a contractor selected to conduct a feasibility study.
According to a report from The Citizen seen by Zambia Monitor on Wednesday, a contractor has been chosen to evaluate the feasibility of expanding the Tanzania Crude Oil Pipeline, which was originally built in 1968.
The upgrade aims to address the current economic needs of both Tanzania and Zambia by enhancing the pipeline that transports crude oil from Dar es Salaam to Ndola.
Tazama Pipeline Limited Managing Director, Davison Thawethe, stated that the actual cost of the pipeline upgrade would be determined once the feasibility study was completed.
“We have commissioned Norplan to carry out the feasibility study, and the company will begin its task any day now to determine, among other things, the estimated cost of the pipeline,” Thawethe said.
Tanzania’s Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, Doto Biteko, noted that ministries from both countries were engaged in talks to increase investment in the pipeline.
He emphasised that the goal was to reduce cargo haulage on roads, which currently drives up transportation costs and contributes to rising retail fuel prices.
