The family of Mukuka Bwalya, a Kasama-based youth member of the ruling UPND, is demanding a full investigation and accountability from the Zambia Police over his recent death.

Bwalya, aged 30, was reportedly shot by police officers in Kasama on Saturday, October 19, 2024, following a brief pursuit.

At Bwalya’s burial in Kasama District, Northern Province, family representative Chunga Bwembya urged the police to deliver a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances of Bwalya’s death, describing the incident as an unwarranted act of violence.

UPND Provincial Chairman. Nathan Ilunga, standing in solidarity with Bwalya’s family, issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the police to identify the officer responsible for the shooting and to initiate disciplinary action.

“We demand that the police identify the officer who shot Bwalya within 48 hours, and disciplinary action must follow,” declared Ilunga.

Speaking on the broader issue, UPND National Youth Chairman, Gilbert Liswaniso, emphasized the importance of discipline among youth within the ruling party, echoing President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision of a disciplined and constructive youth force.

Liswaniso urged youths to adhere to lawful conduct and called on government officials to work with party leaders in managing youth activities.

Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao extended his condolences to Bwalya’s family, commending them for maintaining peace throughout the mourning period.

He assured the family that the government was committed to a thorough and lawful investigation into the shooting. “I wish to assure the family that the law will be upheld to ensure justice prevails,” Mbao stated.
