Exploiting solutions journalism to elevate media appreciation in Zambia, by Jane Zyambo

0

Solutions journalism offers a compelling way to enhance media appreciation in Zambia by focusing on not only the problems facing society but also how communities address them.

This approach emphasizes reporting on constructive stories and solutions, rather than solely highlighting issues, thereby inspiring and empowering audiences to take action.

To advance solutions journalism, the media can adopt strategies such as sharing stories of Zambians making positive community impacts and showcasing innovative local solutions.

In-depth analysis is crucial, as it requires reporters to move beyond surface-level coverage to provide a comprehensive understanding of how challenges are being addressed.

Engaging formats such as videos, podcasts, and infographics can make solutions journalism more accessible and captivating.

Additionally, fostering audience participation through social media, public events, or workshops can build a sense of ownership and encourage proactive responses to reported issues.

Providing additional resources or toolkits to help audiences act on these issues further supports the effectiveness of solutions journalism.

Recognition of media excellence, as demonstrated by awards and accolades, plays a significant role in appreciating and promoting solutions journalism.

For example, World Vision hosted the Media Recognition Awards on March 27, 2024, at Lusaka’s Taj Pamodzi Hotel.

The event honored journalists who shed light on transformational community development through their reporting.

Simon Ziba, Chief Executive Officer of VisionFund, emphasized the importance of media partnerships, stating, “We want to see this initiative grow and the number of recognized journalists increase.

Let us continue to amplify the voices of all, spotlight issues that demand attention, and advocate for policies that promote financial inclusion and economic empowerment.”

World Vision Zambia Chief Executive Officer John Hasse also expressed gratitude, saying, “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the media houses across Zambia for their exceptional support over the years.

To the journalists, your work does not go unnoticed; we are immensely proud of your contributions.”

Such recognition events highlight how solutions journalism is valued for amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups and spotlighting their challenges and solutions, further enhancing the appreciation and impact of media in Zambia.
