Former Vice President, Inonge Wina, has expressed concern over Zambia’s current political environment, describing it as lacking unity and peace.

Wina highlighted the importance of maintaining the country’s legacy of harmony, recalling how Zambia’s freedom fighters pursued independence without resorting to violence.

Speaking at the SHEroes breakfast event organized by Standard Chartered Bank at Pamodzi Hotel in Lusaka, Wina challenged citizens to honor this legacy.

“We have not done enough to honor our freedom fighters. Politics today are so diverse, and we are failing to bring unity to the country. A lot needs to be done to uphold the peace and unity our leaders established,” she said.

Reflecting on Zambia’s journey to independence, Wina noted that the freedom sought in 1964 was grounded in a shared goal and solidarity, which contrasted sharply with the present climate.

She stated the collective spirit that once united young Zambians in the struggle against colonial rule, while young people today pursue economic freedom in a vastly different environment.

Panelist and former U.S. Ambassador, Mbikusita Lewanika, urged parents to equip children with knowledge of current affairs, underscoring the need for informed future leaders.

Meanwhile, Standard Chartered Board Chairperson, Dolika Banda, stressed the importance of recognizing the role women played in Zambia’s independence and the need to elevate women in business, science, technology, and political leadership.

“Women were, are, and always will be the fabric that binds us as a society and a nation,” Banda said, noting that 2024 will mark 60 years of Zambia’s independence.
