Ex-special advisor to President Lungu, Zumani, pleads not guilty to terrorism charges

Former State House Special Advisor to president Edgar Lungu, Chris Zumani Zimba, has pleaded not guilty to terrorism charges.

Zumani is facing one count charge of aiding terrorism contrary to section 28 of the Anti-Terrorism and Non- Proliferation Act, 2018 as read with Act No 6 of 2023 of the Laws of Zambia.

He was jointly charged with Given Phiri, Marlone Banda ,34, and Portipher Gwai, 44, in connection with the 2020 gassing incidences.

Zumani is facing one count of aiding of terrorism acts, while Phiri and Banda are facing one count of possession of terrorism articles, and Gwai is facing a charge of procurement of terrorism articles.

When the four appeared before Lusaka High Court Judge, Koreen Mwenda-Zimba, they took a plea of not guilty.

Trial in the matter commences on Thursday .

It was alleged in count one that Phiri and Banda on dates unknown but between February 22, 2020 and February 23, 2020 in Petauke jointly and whilst acting together did possess 1 bottle of 250ML Halothane, I bottle of 350ML deep 600 and 1 Bottle of 250ML forane isoflurand BP articles for a purpose connected with the commission, preparation or instigation of an act of terrorism or proliferation.

In count two, Gwai on unknown dates but between February 1, 2020 and February 22, 2020 in Lusaka, did procure 1 bottle of 250ML Halothane, 1bottle of 350ML deep 600 and 1 Bottle of 250ML forane isoflurand articles used for the commission of a terrorist act or proliferation.

In the last count, it was alleged that Zimba on unknown dates but between February 1, 2020 and February 22, 2020 in Lusaka, did aid Phiri and Banda to conduct terrorist act or proliferation in Petauke district.
