Former Socialist Party spokesperson, Frank Bwalya, has launched a scathing attack on party leader Dr. Fred M’membe, calling him the “chief priest of malice and hatred.”

During a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Bwalya accused M’membe of targeting many individuals with attacks aimed at humiliating, dehumanizing and destroying them during his tenure as editor of The Post Newspaper.

He claimed that Zambians have not forgotten how M’membe allegedly demonised the late President Michael Sata through lengthy editorials and stories because of his support for the late President Dr. Levy Patrick Mwanawasa.

“When Mwanawasa died and the late Rupiah Banda became president, M’membe switched camps and began supporting Sata after failing to win Banda over,” Bwalya stated.

He added that: “It was then Banda’s turn to be insulted. When Sata became president, Fred was very happy, but his tax problems remained, leaving him frustrated.”

Bwalya, the former Socialist Party Mobilisation Chairperson, said he left the party because he refused to be M’membe’s “puppet” and rejected what he described as “politics of deception and frustration.”

He recalled a meeting chaired by the Socialist Party’s General-Secretary, Dr. Cosmas Musumali, where a decision was made to dissolve the Copperbelt Provincial Leadership Committee without giving the committee an opportunity to defend itself.

This decision followed a complaint lodged in Lusaka by two members of the committee over internal disputes.

Bwalya accused M’membe of engaging in personal attacks against people, even in death and shunning the funerals of those he disliked.

Bwalya’s remarks were in response to comments made by M’membe on August 22, 2024, where he was quoted by online publications as saying, “We wish those who have chosen to burn bridges by maligning us, like Mr. Frank Bwalya, all the best. Mr. Bwalya has been in and out of my life and that of my wife for quite some time now, but today he speaks ill of us.”

M’membe, commenting on the recent crisis in his party due to the exodus of members, added, “And this is not the first time. Every time he finds new friends, he abandons us, but we know that tomorrow he will come back and we will still welcome him.”
