Ex-President Lungu begs Hichilema to evacuate ex-Minister Mwamba for medical treatment abroad

Former President Edgar Lungu has appealed to President Hakainde Hichilema to consider evacuating former Defence Minister, Geoffrey Mwamba, commonly known as GBM, for medical treatment, as his health continues to deteriorate in prison.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Lungu expressed concern over what he described as the Zambian authorities’ refusal to provide tangible and humane assistance to Mwamba, who has been denied constitutional bail pending appeal by the courts.

Lungu stated, “It is with a troubled heart that I write to express my pain and anguish over the continued health deterioration of my brother, Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba, also known as GBM.”

The former president further stressed that it would be ethically and morally wrong for the UPND government to arrange for GBM’s funeral when they have the power to save his life.

He questioned why the UPND government, which had previously appointed GBM as Vice-President in 2016, would not act to help him in his time of need.

Recalling the 2008 midnight evacuation of his political rival, Michael Sata, by President Levy Mwanawasa for medical treatment, Lungu urged President Hichilema to show “brotherly love, Christian touch, and humane grace” by facilitating GBM’s evacuation for specialized care.

He emphasized that such gestures help unite the nation, healing political divisions and fostering national unity.
