Ex-leader, Lungu, told to resist temptation of contesting in 2026 presidential election

The opposition New Generation Party (NGP) president, Humphrey Siulapwa, has written to former President Edgar Lungu requesting him to resist the temptation of standing for Presidency in 2026.

In a letter dated April 23, 2023, Siulapwa said those putting pressure on Mr. Lungu to stand for Presidency in 2026 should stop because he already served the nation as President.

He has noted with sadness that some members of the party, the Patriotic Front (PF), for their selfish reasons, are pushing Mr. Lungu to run again and are lying that he can win, despite knowing that he can not.

“Our request is, whatever happens behind the scenes, in your party, please, resist the temptation to run again. You have run your race. You have succeeded in some areas and failed in some areas. This is how leadership goes,” Siulapwa said.

He said as a former President, Mr. Lungu has a lot of influence in the country, which he can use to unite the country or to divide it.

“No doubt, should you decide to run, you will divide the country with potenal of igniting fresh violence we witnessed during your reign. Even us, who did not vote for you but still respect you, may lose our respect for you and start saying things we should not say to a former President who is the father of the nation,” Siulapwa said.

He has urged all Zambians to accord Mr. Lungu respect and help him play the role of being the father of the nation.

Siulapwa said there are two things that Zambia needs the most today and these are ‘peace and jobs’ because without peace, there can be no development.

“Peace is the greatest gift that God has given us as a country. We almost lost this gift during your reign as President. Your party, sadly, became a party of thugs and criminals, beating up people at will without repercussions,” he said.
