Former Chifunabuli Constituency Member of Parliament, Ponde Mecha, has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to consider granting pardon to Emerine Kabanshi, the former Minister of Community Development and Social Services, on health and compassionate grounds.

Kabanshi is currently serving a sentence after being convicted by the Lusaka Magistrate Court for willful failure to follow procedures regarding the amendment of a contract between the Ministry of Community Development and ZAMPOST, related to the disbursement of Social Cash Transfer funds.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Mecha stated that Kabanshi’s ongoing health challenges warranted urgent attention.

He called on the people of Luapula Province to unite in support of her, as they had done for others in similar situations.

Mecha stated, “I make this lone appeal to His Excellency the President to consider pardoning Hon. Kabanshi on compassionate and health grounds. She has already paid her debt to society, and allowing her to continue serving her sentence under such conditions only deepens the pain of her story.”

He further challenged the silence from various societal stakeholders and former PF ministers who served alongside Kabanshi, urging them to stand by her in this difficult time.

Mecha noted that Kabanshi’s contributions to both Luapula and the nation, particularly in advancing initiatives for vulnerable women and children, remained significant.
