Ex-Kasama lawmaker, Sampa, appears in court for alleged theft, possession of fake currency

Former Kasama Member of Parliament, Kelvin Sampa, has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court on charges of theft by agent, forgery, and illegal possession of forged currency.

Sampa, 52, a businessman from Lusaka’s Meanwood area, pleaded not guilty to all four counts during his appearance before Magistrate Irene Wishimanga.

The charges against Sampa relate to incidents allegedly occurring between July and October 2024.

According to the indictment Sampa, acting in concert with unknown individuals, stole a total of US$150,000 entrusted to him for the purchase of gold.

In count one, it is alleged that between July 27 and September 30, 2024, in Lusaka, Sampa stole $70,000 that was entrusted to him by Kunihiro Fugishima for the purchase of gold.

In count two, between August 1 and September 30, 2024, in Lusaka, Sampa allegedly stole $80,000 from Satoshi Sakamoto, also entrusted to him for gold procurement.

Illegal Possession of Forged Bank Notes (Count 3): On October 9, 2024, Sampa is accused of possessing 110 forged $100 US banknotes, knowing them to be counterfeit.

Possession of Paper for Forgery (Count 4): On October 9, 2024, Sampa allegedly had in his possession 7,622 sheets of paper intended to be used to create counterfeit $100 US banknotes.

The trial is set to begin on January 13, 2025.
