Ex-Home Affairs Minister, Mangani, knocks Inspector -General of Police for alleged reckless statement

Former Home Affairs Minister, Lameck Mangani, is demanding that Inspector General (IG) of Police, Graphel Musamba, withdraw his statement that the previous administration employed junkies as officers.

Reacting to Musamba, who was quoted in the media as saying the Patriotic Front (PF) employed junkies as Police Officers, Mangani said the statement can only be seen to be political, and in the end steer anger, hate and disdain among citizens towards the police.

Mangani told Zambia Monitor that the IG is inciting the public to start disrespecting the police and the men and women in uniform are human beings who may end up losing lives if the public start reacting to this statement.

He said IG Musamba must also apologize to his men and women in uniform and the Zambian people.

“The image of the police has been under a lot of criticism both in the past and even now, the least you expect from the top police officer is a statement that adds to the narrative,” Mangani said.

He said the primary responsibility of the IG is charged with the overall administrative management of the police service, exercises independent command over the National Police Service and to supervise the command.

Mangani said Police Inspectors were bestowed with the primary responsibility of ensuring the protection of the people from possible criminal activities, and to safeguard the lives of police officers during duty.

The former Chipata Central lawmaker said it was not the responsibility of the IG to start issuing inflammatory political statements on behalf politicians.

“The IG is also responsible for the good order of the police, discipline, and professionalism including the portraying a good image of the police so as to instill trust among members of the general public,” he said.
