Ex-Home Affairs minister, Mangani, cautions against trial of accused persons without diligent prosecution

Former Home Affairs Minister, Lameck Mangani, has called on law enforcement agencies to take cases involving the children of former president Edgar Lungu to Court in order to allow them to defend themselves.

Mangani said this when he addressed the media on Friday in Lusaka in response to the complaints from former president Lungu’s family, who feel demonized by government and the society.

He emphasized the need for the Lungu family to be given an opportunity to defend themselves in court.

Mangani also criticized the security agencies for hastily accusing people of accumulating wealth without first conducting thorough investigations.

“I want to emphasize that it is important to follow the due process of the law no matter how juicy the cases may be perceived to be. At the same time I want to indicate that am not trying to defend any wrong doing by anybody but appeal that in all this the due process must be followed,” he said.

Mangani called for professionalism and thoroughness from the security operatives to ensure legitimate justice is served and avoid media trials in their investigations.

“The common practice of shouting ‘kawalala kawalala’ or that there is a lion in the village, can be costly and embarrassing when you don’t find anything,” he said.
