Ex-Chipolopolo striker’s son, Mbesuma, gets chance to play for Zambia U20

Ex- Zambia Chipolopolo striker, Collins Mbesuma’s son Liniker Mbesuma,has been handed a chance to fight for a place on the 2023 U20 AFCON tournament team.

Fifteen-year-old Mbesuma has yet to be capped at junior level for Zambia and is currently attached to South African lower-tier club Warriors FC Academy where he plays for their Under-19 team.

Liniker Mbesuma was born in Zambia but has grown up in South Africa where his father played for Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Moroka Swallows.

Mbesuma Senior also played for English club Portsmouth and Maritimo in Portugal.

“We have been hearing of Mbesuma in South Africa and we want to assess him and see if we can include him in the team with a few others,” Zambia U20 coach Chisi Mbewe said.

Meanwhile, Zambia is returning to the U20 AFCON for the first time since lifting the title as hosts in 2017.

Egypt will host the 2023 U20 AFCON from February 18 to March 12.

Zambia qualified for the 2023 U20 AFCON after winning the 2022 COSAFA U20 Cup when they beat then-holders Mozambique 1-0 in the final last October at the tournament held in Eswatini.

Both Zambia and Mozambique are the COSAFA zone’s representatives in Egypt.
