Zambia has been named a key partner of the European Union (EU), with Commerce, Trade and Industry Minister, Chipoka Mulenga, pledging to strengthen bilateral relations focused on trade and investment.

A delegation of representatives from 17 EU Member States is currently in Zambia to explore potential investment opportunities, according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday by Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Everness Nankala.

Speaking when the delegation paid a courtesy call on him, Mulenga emphasized the importance of moving beyond aid to fostering joint ventures.

“We need to shift from a dependence on support and donations to sustainable partnerships. This approach will ensure equitable sharing of resources, revenue, skills, and development for mutual benefit,” he said.

EU Ambassador to Zambia and COMESA, Karolina Stasiak, praised the long-standing relationship, noting that the visit coincides with the 50th anniversary of EU-Zambia relations.

“This milestone underscores the strong and enduring character of our partnership,” she said.

Yamin Guerfi, Chairperson of the EU Council African Working Group and head of the delegation, said the visit aimed to deepen understanding of Zambia and promote dialogue with both government and the private sector.

She reiterated EU’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s business environment and exploring investment opportunities.

“This development is a significant boost to Zambia’s economy, as the EU remains one of its strongest partners,” Guerfi said, adding that the enhanced partnership is expected to spur economic growth, job creation, and sustainable development.
