Presidential motorcade escort, Sergeant Mike Mumba, has died following a road accident near Lewanika Mall in Woodlands, Lusaka, on Thursday morning.
Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the fatality, stating that the accident occurred around 09:10 hours at the junction of Mosi-O-Tunya and Nyatwa Roads. Mumba, 40, was riding a BMW motorbike (registration ZP 3077) from south to north when the collision happened.
Hamoonga said Mumba sustained severe head injuries and was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Maina Soko Medical Centre.
The accident involved a Toyota Allex (registration ACT 6444) driven by Charles Tembo, 43, of Chilenje, Lusaka. Preliminary investigations indicate that Tembo, heading north and turning west onto Nyatwa Road, failed to exercise due care, colliding with Mumba’s motorbike, which had the right of way.

“The driver of the Toyota Allex has been detained and will be charged with Causing Death by Dangerous Driving,” Hamoonga stated.
Tembo sustained chest pains, a headache, and back pain, while his vehicle and the motorbike were extensively damaged.
The Inspector General of Police has extended condolences to Mumba’s family and colleagues, urging all motorists to adhere to traffic regulations to prevent such tragedies.
“The Zambia Police Service appeals to all road users to exercise maximum caution and follow traffic rules to avoid the loss of life,” Hamoonga said.
