The Energy Regulation Board (ERB) has assured consumers that Zambia had sufficient fuel stocks and urged the public not to engage in panic buying.
ERB Director General, Elijah Sichone, stated that the country was not facing a fuel crisis, noting that any shortages at some service stations were due to operational challenges rather than supply issues.
“For petrol, we have 23 million litres available at various facilities against an average daily consumption of 1.6 million litres. The picture we are painting is that we have sufficient stocks throughout the country—there is no crisis,” Sichone said during a media briefing in Lusaka on Monday.
He also highlighted that diesel consumption had increased to 4.5 million litres per day last year from 3.6 million litres previously.
As of last Friday, the country had 96.8 million litres of diesel, equivalent to over 21 days of supply—exceeding the ERB’s minimum reserve requirement.
The ERB reiterated its commitment to ensuring a stable fuel supply and urged the public to remain calm.
