The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) says it expects the reopened Kasenseli Gold Mine to ensure that mining operations are carried out legally and safely.
Following the increased number of deaths resulting from unregulated illegal mining, EIZ Chief Executive Officer, David Kamungu, emphasized the reinforcement of regulations and industry standards to ensure that mining operations were carried out legally and safely.
Kamungu said this in a statement issued on Thursday in Lusaka.
“We expect that Kasenseli will ensure that all employees and contractors that will be engaged to carry out engineering works are compliant pursuant to the EIZ Act number 17 of 2010. Qualified professionals in mining and engineering must also undergo extensive regular training to manage complex geological, environmental, and mechanical processes” he said.
EIZ president, Wesley Kaluba, expressed optimism that this new development would be open opportunity for government to collaborate with mining and engineering regulators.
Kaluba stated that this would lead to provision of a safe and conducive environment in line with the development outcomes of the Eighth National Development Plan on citizen participation.
“The Institution stands ready to support government’s efforts by providing technical expertise and will ensure that, as Kasenseli meets its obligations, it remains ethical and professional in its engineering operations and delivers works that are of acceptable standards for the benefit of the Zambian people,” Kaluba said.
On Sunday, President Hakainde Hichilema reopened the gold mine as a partnership between the Chibwika Chiefdom Development Trust and the Zambia Gold Company.
