The U.S. government has reaffirmed its ongoing support for the Lobito Corridor in Angola, with continued investments despite the transition to the administration of President Donald Trump, who was sworn in on January 20, 2025.

This commitment was conveyed by Anthony Eterno, First Secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Angola, during a visit to Lobito Port on January 23, 2025.

Speaking to journalists, Eterno emphasized the sustainability and strength of U.S.-Angola relations, assuring that projects initiated under the previous U.S. administration would not only continue but could also see accelerated progress.

“The relationship between the U.S. and Angola is quite sustainable. The projects underway will not only continue but are expected to gain momentum,” Eterno stated.

According to the Africa Newspaper, he also praised the Lobito Port, recognizing its strategic importance in regional and international trade. The U.S. has invested over US$600 million in the Lobito Corridor, focusing on improving infrastructure, modernizing the Benguela Railways, enhancing the port, and fostering regional economic growth.

Celso Rosas, Chairperson of the Port of Lobito Board, welcomed the continued U.S. support, underscoring the significance of the strategic partnership between the two nations.

“The arrival of the First Secretary to Lobito demonstrates the American government’s commitment to advancing the strategic relationship with Angola,” Rosas stated.

He highlighted the ongoing collaboration with the American Coast Guard, which has been providing advisory and consultancy services to improve port security and operations. A Coast Guard delegation is expected to visit Lobito soon to further bolster these efforts.

The Port of Lobito has seen significant modernization since its establishment in 1903, including major upgrades in 2012 that introduced state-of-the-art infrastructure.

The port now operates under the Landlord Port Model, with concessions granted to Africa Global Logistics (AGL) for the multipurpose terminal and to Lobito Atlantic Railway (LAR) for the mineral terminal.

These partnerships are designed to improve trade efficiency and enhance Angola’s economic connectivity with its neighboring countries.

The U.S. support for the Lobito Corridor is aligned with broader goals of strengthening regional integration, improving trade infrastructure, and promoting Angola’s economic growth.
