Electoral Commission blames political parties for voter apathy, cites weak candidates

Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) Commissioner, MacDonald Chipenzi, has attributed low voter turnout during by-elections to political parties fielding weak candidates and failing to deliver compelling campaign messages.

Addressing political parties and voter educators in Kawambwa on Sunday, Chipenzi dismissed claims that the ECZ was to blame for voter apathy.

Instead, he argued that political parties must take responsibility for their candidate selection and messaging strategies.

“It is unfair to blame the Commission for voter apathy. Political parties need to raise the bar by selecting strong candidates and delivering messages that inspire voters to participate,” Chipenzi said during the meeting held at the Kawambwa Civic Centre.

Chipenzi revealed that the ECZ is targeting at least 50 percent voter turnout and a rejection rate of less than one percent in the upcoming Pambashe Parliamentary by-election.

He stated the Commission’s commitment to voter education and outreach to boost participation.

The Pambashe seat became vacant following the conviction of former Member of Parliament Ronald Chitotela. Nominations for the seat are scheduled for January 7, 2025, with the election set for February 6, 2025.

Meanwhile, seven political parties have expressed interest in fielding candidates for the Pambashe by-election.

The ECZ reiterated its resolve to ensure a fair and well-attended election.
