The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set September 19, 2024, as the date for the Kawambwa Council Chairperson by-election, along with three other ward by-elections.

These by-elections would take place in Lukanga Ward of Kabwe District in Central Province, Kabalenga Ward in Mwansabombwe District of Luapula Province, and Chidi Ward in Zimba District of Southern Province.

According to Patricia Luhanga, ECZ Corporate Affairs Manager, the polls would be held from 06:00 hours to 18:00 hours on Thursday, September 19, 2024.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, Luhanga noted that nominations for these by-elections will be conducted on Tuesday, August 20, 2024.

“The campaign period begins on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, and will end at 18:00 hours on Wednesday, September 18, 2024,” she said.

The Kawambwa by-election arose following the conviction of Kawambwa District Council Chairperson Kalumba Chifumbe of the Patriotic Front by the Courts of Law on July 22, 2024.

The vacancies in the three wards were due to a conviction, resignation and death.

“Aspiring candidates should submit completed and attested statutory declarations and nomination papers, subscribed before a Magistrate or other authorized official, on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, between 09:00 hours and 15:00 hours,” Luhanga advised.

She added that candidates must also present certified copies of their Grade 12 Certificates, as a minimum academic qualification or equivalent.

“Adoption certificates for candidates sponsored by a political party must bear the signatures and full names of both the Secretary-General and President, or the Secretary-General of the party,” Luhanga stated.

She warned that aspiring candidates must comply with these requirements, as failure to do so will render their nomination papers invalid.
