EITI official, Clark, lauds Zambia’s high validation score for operating responsibly, transparently in extractive industry

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged mining investors to operate responsibly, avoiding environmental damage and harm to local communities.

Speaking at State House in Lusaka during a meeting with Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Board Chairperson, Helen Clark, Hichilema emphasized government’s commitment to reforms aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency, and investment appeal in the mining sector.

“Our commitment to responsible and accountable mineral extraction is reflected in Zambia’s EITI validation score of 90 out of 100,” he stated.

Hichilema lauded Clark’s visit, underscoring the importance of transparency and accountability in resource governance. He also commended EITI’s continued support in strengthening Zambia’s extractive sector.

In response, Clark, a former New Zealand Prime Minister and UNDP Administrator, praised Zambia’s strong track record in the EITI framework, citing its high validation score of 89.5.

She welcomed the government’s efforts in environmental safeguards and water management, noting their significance for sustainable development.

“With the upcoming validation, Zambia is well-equipped to meet new EITI standards, which extend beyond transparency to include critical mineral agreements,” Clark said.
