The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has reported the alleged weaponization of Zambia’s legal and justice system under President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration to Amnesty International, citing escalating human rights violations.
In a letter to Amnesty International Secretary General, Dr. Agnès Callamard, EFF President, Kasonde Mwenda accused the administration of suppressing opposition voices and undermining the rule of law through arbitrary arrests, abductions, assaults, and the misuse of state institutions.
Mwenda claimed Zambia’s democratic integrity had deteriorated significantly under the United Party for National Development (UPND) government, with opposition figures and dissenters facing politically motivated detentions.
Citing his own arrest alongside EFF General Secretary Changala Siame, Mwenda described the alleged use of violence against opposition members, including incidents involving former Munali MP, Mumbi Phiri and Nkana lawmaker, Binwell Mpundu.
“State institutions, including the Human Rights Commission, have been hijacked to serve partisan interests,” Mwenda said.
He further accused the government of eroding Zambia’s democratic legacy and international reputation.
Amnesty International confirmed receipt of the report and pledged to review the allegations.
Mwenda called on the Zambian media, civil society, and global stakeholders to demand accountability for the government’s actions.
“The EFF remains committed to fighting for justice, democracy, and the rights of all Zambians,” he said.
