Education Minister, Douglas Syakalima, says there is need for leaders capable of driving innovation, fostering sustainable development, and navigating the challenges of a rapidly changing world.
Speaking at the 11th Graduation Ceremony for Gideon Robert University in Lusaka on Friday, Syakalima reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making education a cornerstone of Zambia’s development agenda.
“The introduction of free education and the extension of student loans to all public universities reflect the government’s desire to ensure that education becomes a driver of the country’s development,” Syakalima said.
He described education as both an investment and a pathway out of poverty, noting that nations breaking the poverty cycle had prioritized educating their citizens.
Addressing the graduates, Syakalima reminded them that leadership was not about titles but about inspiring others to achieve their goals.
“The country needs leaders who can drive innovation, foster development, and adapt to changing times,” he said.
To graduates in the health sector, Syakalima urged them to prioritise compassion and care for patients in their professional practice.
During the ceremony, Vice President, Mutale Nalumango, was awarded an honorary degree in education and political science in recognition of her significant contributions to her community and the teaching profession.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening education as a key driver of national progress and development.
