The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has set December 20, 2024, as the date for the National Assembly by-election in Kawambwa Constituency, Luapula Province.
The same date will also see by-elections in Kawama Ward, Chililabombwe District, Copperbelt Province, and Lilondo Ward, Shangombo District, Western Province.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, ECZ Senior Corporate Affairs Officer Sylvia Bwalya confirmed the election schedule, stating that polls would run from 06:00 to 18:00 hours on Friday, December 20, 2024.
Nominations for all three by-elections will be conducted on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
According to Bwalya, the campaign period would officially commence the following day: “Campaign period commences on Friday, November 22, 2024, at 14:00 hours and would end at 18:00 hours on Thursday, December 19, 2024.”
Bwalya explained that the Kawambwa by-election was necessitated by the recent conviction of the sitting Member of Parliament, Nixon Chilangwa of the Patriotic Front (PF), in a court of law.

The two ward vacancies also stem from recent developments.
In Kawama Ward, the seat fell vacant following the death of United Party for National Development (UPND) Councillor Gertrude Witola on October 24, 2024, while in Lilondo Ward, PF Councillor Lipenta Lizina resigned on October 1, 2024.
“Aspiring candidates in the by-elections should lodge completed and attested statutory declaration and nomination papers subscribed before a Magistrate, Local Court Magistrate, Head of a Government Primary or Secondary School, Principal of a College, Commissioner for Oaths, Election Officer or Returning Officer on Thursday, November 21, 2024, between 09:00 hours and 15:00 hours,” she stated.
The ECZ encouraged all eligible candidates and voters in the respective constituencies to participate actively in the electoral process, which would be conducted according to established legal and procedural standards.
