DNP leader, Chiyaba, brands political alliances as surrogate arrangements driven by selfish motives

Sydney Chiyaba, leader of the opposition Democratic National Party (DNP), has accused certain political parties of acting as surrogates, forming alliances primarily to support their financiers.

In response to Zambia Monitor, regarding DNP’s potential participation in alliances, Chiyaba stated that what currently existed in Zambia were ‘head and tail’ relationships, where one party leads while others follow.

“The DNP is focused on forming a government and does not engage in head and tail alliances, but rather seeks win-win partnerships with parties that share similar visions and credibility,” he said.

Chiyaba emphasized that the DNP would only align with credible parties that reflected its values and commitment to national progress, rejecting alliances led by those wishing to return to past regimes.

He described such a move as retrogressive.

“Our priority is to remain relevant to voters, secure their support and transform the country. We can achieve synergies with like-minded parties,” he stated.

He criticised the current alliances, claiming they offered little to the public and prioritize personal gain at the expense of the poor, which contradicted the DNP’s core values.

“What I see are surrogates championing alliances to endorse their financiers, motivated by financial gain or government positions, which goes against the DNP’s mission to represent the impoverished and serve the nation,” Chiyaba concluded.
