Developing Story: Trial continues in case of alleged quack doctor who caused amputation of woman’s limb

A medical doctor at the University teaching Hospital (UTH) has told a Magistrate court that examinations reviewed that unknown substance was given to a 31-year-old woman of Lusaka who had her arm amputated.

This is after a self-proclaimed medical doctor of Chazanga Compound allegedly administered a family planning injection on her.

Hamububali Muzyamba, 34, was testifying in a matter in which Shadreck Hangandu unlawfully and with intent to injure, administered a noxious drug on Nancy Lensho Musonda causing her some grievous harm.

Hangandu pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Muzyamba narrated before magistrate Crispin Hampungani that examinations proved that unknown substance was given to the victim.

“The history is that the patient came on August, 12, 2022 in unconscious state with a swollen upper limb, the limb had puss discharge, the background of the limb infection was that he was given unknown substance.

He said after carrying out blood test, the patient was put on antibiotics, and counselled together with the relatives for an operation of the left upper limp of the shoulder where the infection was.

Muzyamba further testified that on 22 August 22, 2022 the operation was conducted and the patient was transferred to ICU. Subsequently, the patient made favourable progress and was discharged on 29 November,2022.

“Nancy did complained of the sensation, the cause of the sensation was nerves that had been cut,” he said.

He said the patient was injected a contraceptive and later developed a wound.

Muzyamba further narrated that on August 26, 2022 the patient underwent a repeat operation to clean the puss.

“On September 1, 2022, again the patient underwent an operation. During her mission to the hospital, she did receive one unit of blood transfusion, on the index operation on August 22.

She received two unit of blood on her second operation as and lastly, on her third operation she received one unit of blood. The necessity of the blood transfusion on the patient was because she had no blood,” he said.

During trial filled with emotions, Musonda narrated how she woke up at the University Teaching Hospital without her arm.

Musonda said the accused was introduced to her buy neighbour adding that after the alleged contraceptive was injected she experienced pain.

The victim told the court that after serval visits to health facilities her swollen arm burst open and she was unconscious until her arm was amputated.

Trial continues on April 25, 2023.
