Defending champions Zambia shocked by Kenya in COSAFA Cup 2024 opener

Champions Zambia started the defence of their COSAFA Cup 2024 title on a losing note after suffering a surprise 2-0 defeat at the hands of East African guest nation Kenya at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Thursday.

It was not the start the Chisi Mbewe-drilled team was looking for in pursuit of a record-breaking third title in a row.

Kenya went ahead when Austine Odhiambo slotted home a cool penalty kick just eight minutes into the game.

Kenya doubled the lead shortly afterward when the Zambian defence went to sleep, allowing Patrick Otieno to sneak in and beat goalie Charles Kalumba.

The seven-time champions seemed rejuvenated in the second half, as Chipolopolo dominated possession, but unfortunately, that did not translate to a goal.

The result comes after Zimbabwe’s 1-0 victory over Comoros in their Group B opener.

Only the top team in each of the three pools and the best-placed runner-up will qualify for the semifinals this year.

Zimbabwe narrowly beat Comoros 1-0 following a winning goal in the second half from Michael Tapera.
