The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has arrested five truck drivers in Kazungula for trafficking illegal substances during a routine inspection.

DEC Public Relations Officer, Allan Tamba, said the drivers, who were traveling from South Africa to Zambia, were found with large quantities of high-grade cannabis and bottles of Benylin with Codeine, concealed within bags of mealie meal.

The suspects have been identified as Andrew Simwimba, 30; Namatama Mwanga, 49; Enerst Mutambo, 33; Milliot Phiri, 49; and Syrus Kanzenga, 46.

The illicit substances and trucks were seized for further investigation. Tamba expressed concern over the increasing use of trucking companies by criminals to transport illegal drugs.

He urged trucking firms to monitor their operations closely to prevent the trafficking of illicit substances and avoid the risk of forfeiting their vehicles.

In a separate operation in Lusaka, the DEC arrested Jophel Ngoma, 39, for trafficking 228.1 kg of loose cannabis hidden in four polythene bags.

Two other suspects, Victor Nakaanza, 28, and Richard Mwape, 29, were also arrested for trafficking cannabis, cocaine, and Benylin with Codeine.

In Muchinga Province’s Nakonde District, the DEC arrested 19-year-old Maybin Silomba for trafficking 18 sachets of heroin.

All suspects are in custody, awaiting court appearances.

Tamba reaffirmed DEC’s commitment to dismantling drug trafficking networks and encouraged the public to report suspicious activities to the Commission.
