Zambia’s agricultural sector is attracting foreign businesses with innovative solutions. One of the latest entrants in the sector is Papírna Moudrý, a leading European flytrap manufacturer.

Through a grant from the Czech Development Agency (ČRA), Papírna Moudrý is making inroads into the Zambian market, particularly targeting livestock farmers who struggle with flies in their stables, aiming to provide a simple yet effective solution to combat flies.

The company, which has been a household name in Czechia, is now expanding into the African market with the support of a grant from a B2B project funded by the Czech Development Agency.

Households, especially livestock farmers, across Zambia continue to grapple with persistent fly infestations, especially during the hot and rainy seasons.

The introduction of these Czech fly traps provides a practical and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical-based solutions.

For many Zambian farmers, flies are more than just a nuisance – they can cause significant stress to livestock, leading to reduced productivity and an increased risk of infections.

Papírna Moudrý discovered that Zambian farmers are more receptive to flytraps when they see the benefits for their animals.

“Initially, we thought that the issue of flies was universal across households, but in Zambia, we found that farmers are more interested in how our products can reduce stress in animals and lower the risk of disease,” explains Josef Vaculík, Deputy Director of the Židlochovice-based paper mill during an interview.

The Czech flytraps are environmentally friendly and non-chemical based. “We do not use chemicals that harm people or animals. Our products work efficiently without compromising environmental health,” Vaculík says.

As one of the six priority countries for Czech development cooperation, Zambia offers a stable political environment and welcomes foreign investors. To facilitate its entry into the Zambian market, Papírna Moudrý has partnered with Irena Lowry, a Czech entrepreneur and co-owner of Paracuru Agri, an importer of organic agricultural products to Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Through this partnership, the company has successfully established a network of business contacts, ensuring the availability of its products on the local markets.

Beyond selling flytraps, Papírna Moudrý has plans to set up local operations in Zambia. While the special adhesive used in the traps may still be produced in Europe, the company envisions local packaging and distribution to create jobs for Zambians, particularly women from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“We see a future where part of our production happens in Zambia, providing employment and empowering local communities,” Vaculík added.

The expansion of Papírna Moudrý into Zambia is expected to not only provide relief to households but also create business opportunities within the supply chain, as local distributors and retailers take up the product.

With an increasing demand for effective pest control solutions, the entry of Papírna Moudrý into the Zambian market is likely to offer consumers a wider range of choices in tackling household pests, while also contributing to local business growth.
