Council of Churches in Zambia directs members to worship for only two hours to cholera spread

The Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ) has directed all congregations within its member churches to conduct worship services of not more than two hours.

CCZ General-Secretary Father, Emmanuel Chikoya, stated that the decision followed the continued deaths from cholera which had now claimed 518 lives as at Wednesday 24, 2024.

During a media briefing in Lusaka on Wednesday, Chikoya encouraged people to go to their respective homes without idling and mingling around after the service.

He urged all Clergy and Lay Preachers to conduct contextual bible studies and preach contextual sermons that would help sensitize congregants.

“This should help to change their attitudes and mindsets regarding personal public hygiene and thus contribute to cholera prevention and ending the spread of cholera,” the Clergyman said

He advised all the members and general citizenry to take advantage of the ongoing cholera campaign and get vaccinated against cholera.

Chikoya implored all stakeholders, with a special plea to politicians, to rise above the constraints of politics and join hands in the fight against Cholera.

“This is a time for unity and shared responsibility, transcending political affiliations for the greater good of our beloved nation,” he noted.

The clergyman urged the CCZ fraternity to proactively and corporately join hands and participate in the general and personal cleanup program currently underway.

Chikoya said CCZ stands together with government, all political stakeholders to effectively contribute towards eliminating cholera challenge and prevent it from becoming a national catastrophe.

“In the spirit of embracing the principle of “Love your neighbour as you love yourself,” members are urged to embrace a lifestyle of hygiene consistently, irrespective of the season,” he stated.

The clergyman advised people to take personal responsibility and care of the immediate environment not only when they are adversely affected by a crisis but at all times.

“Furthermore, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the frontline workers who tirelessly dedicate themselves to managing and containing this perilous situation,” he said.
