The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ) has launched disciplinary proceedings against five nurses involved in the controversial Facebook skit titled “We listen, we do not judge, nurse’s edition.”
NMCZ Public Relations Officer, Mailes Banda, confirmed on Thursday that the Council had identified and secured confessions from the individuals responsible.
“Four of the individuals are registered nurses, while one is a finalist student who recently sat for competence examinations during the November/December 2024 session and is awaiting results,” Banda stated.
The Council is addressing allegations of negligence stemming from the skit, which sparked public outrage and raised concerns about professional ethics in the nursing profession.
“The Council has commenced disciplinary proceedings into the individual cases of negligence as confessed by the practitioners,” Banda added, assuring the public that the matters would be resolved amicably.
Banda emphasized the importance of ethical conduct among nurses and midwives, warning that the Council will not hesitate to discipline those who fail to uphold professional standards.
“Nurses and midwives are required by law to adhere to the Code of Ethics and demonstrate professionalism in their conduct and service delivery to protect the integrity of the profession,” she said.
She further urged the public to report cases of negligence involving healthcare workers to the Council.
The skit, posted on social media, drew widespread condemnation, with many questioning the appropriateness of such behavior by medical professionals.
